Sorry for the holdup in posting; it's been a wild season.

You may have heard that I had a BFA Thesis show coming up; you would be right! In early December I graduated from Alfred University with my BFA. The works that went into the show can be seen on my website (under the BFA Thesis Exhibition tab).

Since then I've relocated to lovely Cincinnati, Ohio!

Obviously, without the university facilities on my side (and real-life responsibilities knocking at the door) the work that you see on FIFS might be a little different and more sporadic. I am primarily working with collage right now, although my mister and I are trying to get a small darkroom for silkscreening set up in the closet. I am also going to be trying my hand more at photography.

Roundup on cool stuff in Cinci coming soon for all my little ones back in the great Empire State!

P.S. I debated over whether or not to leave the old handle behind and move on to a new blog, but I think for now I'll keep it up. There are a lot of good memories and some good work in this blog, so I would rather see it evolve than leave it as a dusty old archival tome that no one will see.

Recently I was given a lovely 35mm camera by my dear boyfriend, Chris Luessen of Switch Out The Sun.

Since then I've been having a lot of fun. I've never so much as dipped my toes into film photography before, so it has been an unpredictable but exciting experience. It's good to take a break from the things you're used to and try something new. What is life without challenges?

Finally finished the centerpiece of my work for Artist Multiples.

8' x 4' Luon board with my A.B. Dick postcards manipulated and applied to the surface.

Also includes nails, yarn, photographs, and watercolor paint.

The subject matter surrounds the breakdown of family farms, especially the deterioration of family farms in Western New York, due to industrial farming. Through my research into the topic I found out about irrigation circles, which are used by industrial farms to create fertile farming areas in unnatural environments that would normally be inhospitable to crops. The circles on my wall reference aerial views of industrial irrigation circles. The small photos inside of the "frames" are photographs that I have taken around Western New York of small family farms, focusing on the areas where deterioration is most evident.

The first print is an open watercolor screenprint with a monoprinted background.

Somewhat of a test print that I liked the turnout of. Multiple screenprints over top of one another, with the registration slightly off each time. It creates a kind of vibration that looks like an optical illusion, which is really interesting. They look blurred even close up and are somewhat hard to look at.

They don't work with 3-D glasses, though. I've tried.

A Long Time Far from Home

This piece is part of a four-part series. Each piece is paint on a deconstructed or otherwise damaged textile that was once functional. The paintings examine clutter, deterioration, and the breakdown of utility in places that were at one time practical spaces.

This piece is a scene from my home. I grew up on what was at one time a working horse stable and riding school. The horses are gone now, the sheep play in the judges' box (pictured), and much of the original wood fencing is either missing or has been replaced with wire panels of fence. My parents were getting out of the horse business when I was young, so this transition of space from its original function is something that I watched over time, something that was an everyday, normal thing.

Every day, places such as farms, businesses, and homes deteriorate from lack of care, lack of funds, or any number of other reasons. Nowhere that I have been is this more obvious than Western New York. On a regular basis I drive by wreckages of barns that are little more than piles of wood covered in burrdocks and weeds, or homes that lean to one side as if blown by a heavy wind. I always wonder what it is that makes things falling apart around us seem so normal, when if we step back for a moment, we see what is really happening.

So, although this is a project from last semester, I avoided posting it until now for two reasons:

1. Although I'm happy with how this project turned out, I never thought it was my best work.

2. The photos cannot do it justice; it is about the performative aspect.

But, finally, I am posting it, because there is a video on Youtube now! My performance shows up about 1 minute into it.

The idea of the project was to make a wearable sculpture and a performance to go with that sculpture, all to be worn and performed by the creators at the Wearable Sculpture Dance Party in the Turner Gallery, the Friday night before Halloween. They couldn't be costumes; they had to be wearable sculptures. There had to be at least one sewn or papermaking aspect of the sculpture.

Issues of sexuality. Society's views about us as sexual beings - and how that conflicts with our real sexual identity - can destroy us, in a way. Sex and sexuality can be simultaneously the most interesting and the most disgusting things about a person. Having to hide who you are; having to escape from what you want in order to be accepted.

I am not into these sorts of things sexually, but the imagery grabs me.
